Dr. Rishat Abbas, President of the Uyghur Academy, met this week with Dafna Hochman Rand, Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the U.S. Department of State.
The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor said in a statement posted on its official X account: “This week Assistant Secretary Rand was pleased to meet with human rights defenders, including Uyghur-American Dr. Rishat Abbas who advocates tirelessly for the rights of Uyghurs. The U.S. stands by them to support these advocacy efforts.”

The Bureau’s post also included a link to the “Joint Statement on Xinjiang on the Second Anniversary of the OHCHR’s Assessment” submitted by Ambassador Michèle Taylor on behalf of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States to the 57th Session of the UN Human Rights Council on September 24, 2024.
The Uyghur Academy would like to thank Assistant Secretary Rand for meeting with our President, Dr. Rishat Abbas, and for listening to the voice of the Uyghur diaspora. We commend the United States for its leadership in demanding justice for the Uyghur people, who have been subjected to genocide.
