{"id":1272,"date":"2019-04-03T06:45:26","date_gmt":"2019-04-03T06:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/?p=1272"},"modified":"2019-04-03T06:45:26","modified_gmt":"2019-04-03T06:45:26","slug":"government-urged-to-intervene-in-plight-of-uighurs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/?p=1272","title":{"rendered":"Government urged to intervene in plight of Uighurs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Chinese-Police.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1274\" src=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Chinese-Police.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"762\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Chinese-Police.jpeg 622w, https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Chinese-Police-300x169.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px\" \/><\/a>Nurul Azwa Aris &#8211; April 2<\/p>\n<p>PETALING JAYA: NGO Global Peace Mission Malaysia (GPM) today urged the government to intervene in the plight of Uighur Muslims amid reports of oppression against the community in the Xinjiang province.<\/p>\n<p>GPM CEO Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin said about a million Uighurs were recently reported to have been detained by Chinese authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a forum here titled \u201cUighurs\u2019 Plight: Countering Extremism or Religious Discrimination\u201d, he said many Muslim countries had remained silent on the issue with the exception of Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh where a few demonstrations have been held.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ahmad-Fahmi-Mohd-Samsudin-FMT-020419.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1273\" src=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ahmad-Fahmi-Mohd-Samsudin-FMT-020419.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ahmad-Fahmi-Mohd-Samsudin-FMT-020419.jpg 800w, https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ahmad-Fahmi-Mohd-Samsudin-FMT-020419-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ahmad-Fahmi-Mohd-Samsudin-FMT-020419-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Global Peace Mission Malaysia CEO Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He claimed the authorities have been vocal on issues related to Palestine and Syria, but not the Uighurs, adding that access to information on the issue is largely restricted as China practises a \u201cclosed system\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may not be easy, but we believe that there is a way for the government to speak up on the issue through diplomatic ties.<br \/>\n\u201cIn the Asean context, we work closely with China. Maybe the government can use that platform to raise the issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (Mapim) likewise urged Putrajaya to hold discussions with China on the alleged mistreatment of Uighur Muslims in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe care about diplomatic ties, but the obvious oppression is there,\u201d Mapim president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need advocacy from the government side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Wain, a research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies Malaysia, said the situation in Xinjiang must be understood within the regional context.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens there is not so much about religious discrimination,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the Uighurs originated from far beyond China\u2019s borders and possess a unique cultural identity, they are currently citizens of China and must accept that reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added however that the Chinese government should recognise the right of the Uighurs to cultural self-determination, saying oppression will only encourage extremism instead of reducing it.<\/p>\n<p>He, too, said Malaysia has a role to play as China relies heavily on the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey depend on the ships that come through, as Malaysia is located next to the Melaka Straits.<br \/>\n\u201cMalaysia has a voice in this issue.
