{"id":1241,"date":"2019-04-01T07:07:01","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T07:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/?p=1241"},"modified":"2019-04-01T07:07:01","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T07:07:01","slug":"rights-group-urges-nz-to-speak-out-on-uyghur-oppression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/?p=1241","title":{"rendered":"Rights group urges NZ to speak out on Uyghur oppression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Uyghur.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242\" src=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Uyghur.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"853\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Uyghur.jpg 853w, https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Uyghur-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Uyghur-768x437.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><\/a>Human Rights Watch urges New Zealand&#8217;s prime minister to defend rights of Uyghur Muslims in China<br \/>\nRiyaz ul Khaliq | 29.03.2019\u00a0 |\u00a0 ANKARA<\/p>\n<p>A rights group has urged New Zealand&#8217;s prime minister to call on China to respect the human rights of ethnic Uyghur Muslims living in the country&#8217;s Xinjiang province.<\/p>\n<p>U.S.-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) in an open letter to Jacinda Ardern has asked her to express concern about &#8220;mass abuses&#8221; of Turkic Muslims in her meetings with Chinese leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Ardern is scheduled to visit China on April 1.<\/p>\n<p>The HRW praised Ardern\u2019s &#8220;extraordinary leadership&#8221; in the wake of March 15 Christchurch terror attacks which claimed the lives of 50 Muslims and injured as many during congregational Friday prayers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following the horrific attacks on mosques in Christchurch, Prime Minister Ardern spoke forcefully in defense of Muslims\u2019 rights,&#8221; said Sophie Richardson, HRW\u2019s China director.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ardern should show the same global leadership by publicly calling on China to respect the human rights of Muslims there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The HRW said that New Zealand did not join a November 2018 letter with 15 other governments addressed to China seeking access to Xinjiang to assess the human rights situation.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand, according to the right group, has avoided referring to the grave rights violations in China in their national statements at UN forums, including the Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prime Minister Ardern should use her visit to Beijing to join the ranks of governments outraged by the unprecedented abuses of Turkic Muslims in China,&#8221; Richardson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She should publicly call on Chinese leaders to close the &#8216;political education&#8217; camps in Xinjiang, end the widespread abuses, and allow independent, international observers&#8217; access to the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Source: https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/world\/rights-group-urges-nz-to-speak-out-on-uyghur-oppression\/1433531<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Human Rights Watch urges New Zealand&#8217;s prime minister to defend rights of Uyghur Muslims in China Riyaz ul Khaliq | 29.03.2019\u00a0 |\u00a0 ANKARA A rights group has urged New Zealand&#8217;s prime minister to call on China to respect the human rights of ethnic Uyghur Muslims living in the country&#8217;s Xinjiang province.
