Science University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oregon_Health_%26_Science_University\">Oregon Health &amp; Science University<\/a>\u00a0.He\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portland,_Oregon\">was born in \u00a0to Uighur family \u00a0in 1961,\u00a0<\/a><a title=\"Almaty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Almaty\">Almaty<\/a><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portland,_Oregon\">,\u00a0<\/a><a title=\"Kazakhstan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kazakhstan\">Kazakhstan<\/a><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portland,_Oregon\">, then part of the\u00a0<\/a><a title=\"Soviet Union\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soviet_Union\">Soviet Union<\/a><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portland,_Oregon\">.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Splice_4-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/a>\u00a0After served two years in Soviet military, beginning in 1979, as an army radio technician, Mitalipov studied genetics at the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Timiryazev Agricultural Academy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timiryazev_Agricultural_Academy\">Timiryazev Agricultural Academy<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a title=\"Moscow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moscow\">Moscow<\/a>, and also played blues guitar in a cover band to pay the bills.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Splice_4-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>After his graduation from the academy, he worked for a short time as the chief livestock specialist in the kolkhoz in the Yaroslavl region.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He received his\u00a0<a title=\"Master's degree\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Master%27s_degree\">master\u2019s degree<\/a>\u00a0in 1989.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Splice_4-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He earned his\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ph.D.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ph.D.\">Ph.D.<\/a>\u00a0in developmental and stem cell biology from the\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"Research Centre of Medical Genetics (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Research_Centre_of_Medical_Genetics&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Research Centre of Medical Genetics<\/a>\u00a0in Moscow.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Splice_4-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>After the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Fall of the Soviet Union\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fall_of_the_Soviet_Union\">fall of the Soviet Union<\/a>\u00a0in 1991 funding for stem cell research was scarce, so Mitalipov applied for and won a fellowship at\u00a0<a title=\"Utah State University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Utah_State_University\">Utah State University<\/a>\u00a0in 1995.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Splice_4-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He started working at the\u00a0<a title=\"Oregon National Primate Research Center\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oregon_National_Primate_Research_Center\">Oregon National Primate Research Center<\/a>\u00a0in 1998, where he could work with monkeys, which share 98% of their DNA with humans;
