{"id":106,"date":"2013-05-14T19:41:47","date_gmt":"2013-05-14T19:41:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/?p=106"},"modified":"2017-07-19T17:37:40","modified_gmt":"2017-07-19T17:37:40","slug":"uyghur-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/?p=106","title":{"rendered":"Uyghur Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Uyghur-L.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-107\" title=\"Uyghur L\" src=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Uyghur-L-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Uyghur-L-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/en.uyghuracademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Uyghur-L.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>Uyghur (\u0423\u0439\u0493\u0443\u0440 \/\u00a0\u0626\u06c7\u064a\u063a\u06c7\u0631)<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Uyghur is a Turkic language with about 10 million speakers mainly in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, and also in Afghanistan, Australia, Germany, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Turkey, the USA and Uzbekistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Uyghur was originally written with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/orkhon.htm\">Orkhon<\/a>\u00a0alphabet, a runiform script derived from or inspired by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/sogdian.htm\">Sogdian<\/a>\u00a0script, which was ultimately derived from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/aramaic.htm\">Aramaic<\/a>\u00a0script.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between the 8th and the 16th century, Uyghur was written with an alphabet derived from<a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/sogdian.htm\">Sogdian<\/a>\u00a0known as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/uyghur.htm#uighurvert\">Old Uyghur<\/a>. Unlike Sogdian, which was written from right to left in horizontal lines, the Old Uyghur alphabet was written from left to right in vertical columns, or in other words, it was a version of Sogdian rotated 90\u00b0 to the left. Uyghur was also written with the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/syriac.htm\">Syriac<\/a>\u00a0alphabet, mostly in Christian documents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the the 16th century until the early 20th century, Uyghur was written with a version of the Arabic alphabet known as &#8216;Chagatai&#8217;. During the 20th century a number of versions of the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets were adopted to write Uyghur in different Uyghur-speaking regions. However the Latin alphabet was unpopular and in 1987 the Arabic script was reinstated as the official script for Uyghur in China.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The name of this language is variously spelt Uigur, Uiguir, Uighuir, Uygur, Uighur, Uygur, Uyghur or in Chinese, \u7ef4\u543e\u5c14\u8bed (W\u00e9iw\u00fa&#8217;\u011bry\u01d4).\u00a0<strong>Uyghur<\/strong>\u00a0is the preferred spelling in the Latin alphabet: this was confirmed at a conference of the Ethnic Languages and Script Committe of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region held in October 2006.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a name=\"uighurvert\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Old Uyghur alphabet<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most of the Old Uyghur letters have different shapes depending on their position in a word. The initial shapes are used at the beginning of words, the medial shapes in the middle, and the final shapes at the ends of words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/writing\/uighur_vert.gif\" alt=\"Old Uyghur alphabet\" width=\"590\" height=\"315\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"right\">Arabic alphabet for Uyghur (\u0626\u06c7\u064a\u063a\u06c7\u0631 \u0626\u06d0\u0644\u0649\u067e\u0628\u06d5\u0633\u0649)<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/writing\/uyghur_arabic.gif\" alt=\"Arabic alphabet for Uyghur\" width=\"547\" height=\"219\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cyrillic alphabet for Uyghur (\u0443\u0439\u0493\u0443\u0440 \u0435\u043b\u0438\u043f\u0431\u04d9\u0441\u0438)<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/writing\/uyghur_cyrillic.gif\" alt=\"Cyrillic alphabet for Uyghur\" width=\"576\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Latin alphabets for Uyghur (uyghur \u00e9lipbesi)<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is no standard or official Latin alphabet for Uyghur: this version, known as\u00a0<em>Yengi Yezik<\/em>\u00a0or<em>Ye\u014bi Yeziq<\/em>\u00a0(New Writing) was used between 1969 and 1987.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/writing\/uyghur_latin.gif\" alt=\"Yengi Yezik \/ Ye\u014bi Yeziq - Latin alphabet for Uyghur from 1969-1987\" width=\"582\" height=\"173\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is the Uyghur Latin Y\u00e9ziq (ULY), which was introduced between November 2000 and July 2001 at five conferences were held at Xinjiang University in Urumchi.
